Building upon a lifetime
of experience, Baywood residents work in concert with staff to create
and participate in a wealth of programs and activities.
Residents make informed choices about how they want to live their
lives not just at the polls, but every day at Baywood. At election
time, for example, residents want to meet and listen to all of the candidates
on the current ballot. Working together with interested residents, Baywood
staff invite the candidates, who come to Baywood to give residents a first-hand
opportunity to learn about the issues.

| Baywood Travelers visit dozens
of interesting locations each year, throughout the Bay Area and
beyond. They have toured the Hayward Planetarium, traveled to the
Gold Country, visited a strawberry farm in Salinas, and enjoyed
a ferry ride and brunch in Sausalito. Twice a year the Baywood Travelers
go to Reno, and once a year they travel internationally. The Travelers
have visited the Panama Canal and Spain, and this year, they cruised
the Mexican Rivera. |

Residents run the Cubby Hole Store,
where residents and staff find sundries, cards, gifts, sweets, and
best of all, convenience. Profits are designated by the Baywood
Court Residents' Association for special projects, including educational
grants for Baywood staff.

The Woodworking Shop
handles innumerable repairs for residents, such as broken lamps,
toasters and rickety chairs. It was the brain-child of residents
who acquired funding from Baywood, permits from the city, and gave
the labor of love to build the shop from the ground up and outfit
it with tools for fine woodworking projects. All Baywood residents
are welcomed. |

A resident-run Literature Series
excites the intellect, with a long list of speakers and topics. In addition,
the Workshop Series focuses on health and other senior issues,
such as scams and safety. In past years, guest speakers have discussed
Impressionist Paintings, Corporate Ethics, Religions of the World, and
Tales of Travel.

When residents get
new ideas, then new programs emerge. The Baywood Court Computer
Lab was developed when residents saw the need for more computers,
Internet access, and peer instruction. Residents write autobiographies,
play games and surf the Internet. E-mail opens great communications
with family and encourages intergenerational letter exchanges.

A resident who enjoyed playing darts presented the idea for a Classic
Game of Darts to the Residents' Association. A dartboard was
purchased, the rules studied and contests launched. Response has
been tremendous. More of a surprise, several romances emerged among
dart players, and wedding bells were heard.

Resident Gardens. Baywood
Court offers many opportunities for residents to preserve and enhance
their independence and interests. Residents built raised beds in
the garden for those who want to grow flowers and vegetables. Every
year the Resident Garden is different. There are always roses and
cut flowers, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and parsley. Some people
have pansies all winter, and others nurture the California poppies
and crocuses that will bloom in the spring.

The resident-managed Baywood Circulation
Library is a service to residents who like to read, including the
visually impaired. The collection includes books from residents and large-print
books from the Alameda County Library. Readers can borrow books for as
long as they like.
|
| The arts and crafts
of artists are on exhibit at the Baywood Art Gallery. At
holiday time, residents' hand-made decorations are featured. Other
shows spotlight residents' paintings and drawings. Occasionally
guest artists have exhibited. |
