Baywood Court occupies the site of a former elementary school which was operated by the Hayward Unified School District from the mid-1950's until 1984. Declining enrollment forced the school district to close the site in 1984 and to sell the property. This decision to sell coincided with Eden Medical Center's detailed analysis of the needs of the older adult community in its primary service area: Castro Valley, Hayward, San Leandro, and San Lorenzo. Concerned with the high proportion of seniors in its service area, Eden Hospital had begun in the early 1980's to develop programs specifically geared to the older adult and routinely to survey the community as to its needs. Repeatedly, the community surveys indicated that safe, well-organized housing which offered a continuum of care was of high interest to all segments of the community and it was a service not easily available in the immediate area. Although unusual for a hospital, Eden Medical Center's board and medical staff decided to explore ways in which it could meet this expressed need. The purchase of the Baywood School site was the first step. Between November 1985 and June 1988, the Hospital conducted detailed financial analyses and planning studies to design what would become Baywood Court. Because housing was a significantly different activity from running a hospital, Eden Medical Center positioned Baywood as an entity within its Eden Hospital Health Services Corporation. Funding was secured through Cal Mortgage - a State financing agency - and construction began in September 1988. Baywood Court is a unique project. It represents the commitment and concern of a progressive local hospital with the broad socio-economic needs of its community in areas beyond the direct provision of health care. Baywood Court is testimony to an organization which views health care as a state of well-being which allows and encourages the older adult to live in an optimal and secure environment. Designed by Hardison, Komatsu, Ivelich & Tucker, and constructed by S. J. Amoroso Construction Company, Baywood Court is one of the newest multi-level retirement communities in the East Bay. Construction costs were $14 million and the facility contains the most contemporary and state-of-the-art amenities and equipment. Baywood Court complies with all appropriate State and local regulations. A variety of governmental agencies have monitored and inspected Baywood Court through its construction. Some of these agencies will continue to monitor and inspect such operations as fire safety, food service, Resident services and staffing. Baywood Court will, at all times, maintain strict compliance with all governmental regulations. |
